Commonly referred to as the “Gateway to Lake Minnetonka,” the city of Wayzata’s name comes from a Lakota Sioux saying that translates to mean “North Shore.” Today Wayzata is a thriving small town residential community that’s home to around 3,600 Minnesotans. The arrival of the railroad system helped Wayzata thrive, attracting more residents from all over. If you visit Wayzata today, you’ll notice the city’s unique architecture that features residential homes such as cottages, mansions, and luxury homes. Lake Minnetonka offers fantastic swimming, boating, and fishing opportunities for Wayzata residents, but there’s so much more to do in the city. Wayzata is home to ten parks and miles of trails for hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. The City of Wayzata has something for every shopper, with boutique shops along the shores of Wayzata Bay. Wayzata has a great selection of restaurants for every occasion, ranging from seafood and steakhouses to exotic international cuisine. The city prides itself on being a pioneer in the area of sustainability, offering organics-recycling and curbside composting. Wayzata Public Schools, independent District 284, is responsible for providing educational services to the residents, with schools that have been nationally recognized for academics. Metro Transit provides public transportation services, including Park and Ride lots and express buses to the downtown districts of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. In 1852, two pioneer families settled in the area, and with the introduction of the railroad in 1867, the town transitioned from a lumber settlement into a resort town, and eventually into the glamorous city that Wayzata is today.
